These are the four ways to communicate with other humans on Substack. In one minute (literally), I take you through Notes, chat, threads, and comments and when to use each one.
Ummm…maybe I’m the real dud here but I don’t know the difference between notes and chats and threads, so this went over my head. I do have the app and I am subscribed to several authors and understand the comments section but past that…lost.
I like notes, I've used chat once or twice before (granted, I joined in March), and I'm trying to figure out this threads situation. Hmmm. Good to know, good to know.
THAT'S what I've been doing wrong! I was using a "chat" as a thread. My word, how'd I miss that?!? Thank you again, Sarah!! Now 🤞this fixes an issue I've been having!
I’m normally pretty adept at these things - but for some reason (either I don’t have it enabled) or I’m using it wrong … I guess I thought “CHAT” section is the same as a thread. Ie: a thread is created by initiating a topic and the thread is the conversation that follows. With all that said I just don’t see those distinctions on my account. I’d love for folks to be able to share what they’re working in via images - perhaps this only happens in NOTES?
The Thread is different. It's like a post. I don't get why they have "threads" and "posts". Notes (public) v Chat (can be private) -- but Threads and Posts seem to have the same options 🤯
One thing I can’t seem to figure out is some accounts seem to have the option in their threads, for replies (from subscribers) to include photos. I can’t seem to enable that in my own threads. Thank you !!
I just saw this... Thread participation is limited to creating a new comment, or replying to an existing comment. Only text is supported in the comments of threads.
Chats allow images. I'm just not sure why chats and threads are different things...
Everyone else has been using the desktop version and I seem to be the only one that is using the app exclusively… but I muddle through each day and get better at it with practice and time. As soon as I get another desktop where I can utilise my gifts and not worry about trying to type my words into the keyboard of my tiny phone, then I’ll find true freedom and liberation from the shackles placed upon my hands… but thank goodness for your help with understanding and navigating the world of Substack.
OK I just have to add that this right here says it all and to some of us, nothing at all: ⇢ "Questions? Ask in the comments or post in Notes but not in the chat because most Substacks use that space for directed conversations. This is a post, not a thread." WTF?
I love you Woman! Thank you for continuing to clarify this platform. I haven't given up yet, but only because of your guidance! (I will not "also share a note" by clicking on the box below this because I'm still not sure what happens when I do that!!!)
I’m so glad I watch this because I want to start doing threads and I didn’t realize there was a separate way to do it! I think I would’ve just made it as a post
Question: if I start a thread..who all will be able to see it? ( Just my followers or anyone on Substack who likes similar 'topics' like mine?) Thank you!

Ok thanks ! I’ll try again :)

Where is "your website" and how do you access it?

As usual...so helpful! TY 🥰

Yes! It would be great for you. You have great engagement. You can also paywall them. That’s Anne Helen Petersen’s whole paid strategy.
Interesting!!! I learn so much from you!
Love your Substack!!
That means so much to me!!! 💜💜💜💜💜
Really appreciate you clarifying this and giving reassurance that I am not alone in my confusion. The best way for me to learn is to do it , thank you
You’re definitely not alone!
I have a question- how does one see others comments on a note? Many times I can see how many comments there are but I cannot see them
It’s actually tricky. You have to tap the top of the note.
Thank you so much!!
Question: if I start a thread..who all will be able to see it? ( Just my followers or anyone on Substack who likes similar 'topics' like mine?) Thank you!
Threads go to your subscribers and anyone on your website. Notes go to the social media network and your subscribers on there plus others.
Thank you Sarah!
Ok, so I’ve been on here six months and didn’t know that there was a separate “threads” function. Thanks, Sarah!
I didn’t use it until a month ago!
That makes me feel better!
Thanks for this explainer! I've only been here a couple of months, so I'm still very much climbing the learning curve of the platform. :)
