I write a substack that interviews and recipes taking you behind the scenes of the food & drink world. But in 2024, I launched a new series where I am cooking recipes from this giant stack of vintage Gourmet magazines I have.
Mary Weiss, leader singer of The Shangri-Las died on January 19. I wanted to do a tribute for her. I really love to do remembrances, eulogies, and tributes for those close to us and those we admire from afar.
Hi everyone, I post my original fiction (micro, flash, and short stories), as well as essays on creativity and writing. Nice to see everyone's range of stacks! Hope to see you all around.
Hey all - I thought this thread would be a good place to ask if anyone is currently dripping out chapters of their non-fiction book every week on their Substack. If you are I'd love to talk hear how it's going. Also if you're in the process of finishing your book and sharing chapters with readers here for feeback. Can you ping me so we can connect?
Hi Esther, good to see you here. I too have left Facebook and at the moment I'm not planning to go back ever. Glad you got the time and healing you needed.
Hi Thea, how lovely to see you here! I feel almost a physical aversion to the idea of Facebook and the other social media sites, and to a lot of the technology I previously "enjoyed". We're meant to be living very differently, aren't we?
INTIMACY : I'm starting to write my inner voice. It spills out in pieces like this.
I'm trying to write personally about the Universal, about a Renaissance I'm seeing - here on Substack - and in the world about the longing for connection.
This post gives you all the seasons in the Ayurvedic calendar as well as the transition points from one season to the next. In Ayurveda, seasonal transitions are times of change in nature and thus can be tumultuous in our mental/emotional/energetic lives as well.
I provide a very simple practice to help you work through the upcoming transition from early to late winter - quite good timing because today is a snow day here in Northern Virginia!
This week I discuss “The Guided Path,” with a nod to the benefits of joining my global WriteSPACE community. Earlier this month I introduced The Meandering Path (aka “finding your own way through a tangled jungle of resources”); next time I’ll explore The Skyward Path, an accelerated route to productivity. In between, I publish a monthly podcast series and colorful essays on wordcraft.
Thank you, Sarah, for starting this lovely thread!
The ideal time definitely depends on your users, so play around with times. If you mostly post on Sunday mornings, maybe try a weekday evening. I tend to send on weekdays (at varying times) and I find that when I send on the weekends, they perform slightly worse.
Thank you for confirming Brianna. I figured as much. I started with Sunday mornings but want to try the week days. I was looking for a “silver bullet” answer but it looks like I’m just going to have to walk out testing different days and times.
This was a vulnerable one to write and share! I spent all weekend laboring over it. ug.
Sarah Fey is already answering all my questions about posting on substack... I am still working on some WONDERFUL homework you gave me two months ago! I'm excited to be here in 2024, learning among you all. Thank you!
I was inspired to chronicle the subtle but significant transformations I have gone through as I broke away from the holiday traditions and allowed my Self to guide my decisions and actions. Another source of inspiration was my recent trip to Northern Thailand and how their vastly different culture transformed me in a good way.
QUESTION about posting on Substack: Is it better to reserve the comment section for paid subscribers or to keep it open to all?
Thank you for your suggestion. I love interacting with my subscribers and found that many were enthusiastic about commenting--as soon as I opened my comment section to all subscribers. I haven't had much traction on Thread, but haven't given up yet. Will give it more shots :-)
I started a blog of poetry and life-thoughts after my Dad died in 2020, now moved to substack. The power of words to comfort and to express innermost guttural feelings is unparalleled. No problems writing it. I'd been thinking about it a while after reading the news and watching the comments about AI, large language models, etc. I see so much gnashing of teeth, but I view this entire issue as simply a massive game changer that too many people and societal mechanisms are not ready for. If youre a writer, you should embrace AI. It's a tool, nothing more.
HOW TO READ, PART 1: I'm beginning to write a series of posts about effective reading for the next edition of my little book on note-making and writing. I'm using these instructions and tips with my students this semester and generalizing it for a new section of the book.
My biggest question about Substack right now is: is it enough to write well and entertain or do you need to bring more tangible value to people’s inbox to grow?
I do serial-novels and philosophy posts, but also lit stuff and this is my first time analysing the Last Samurai with this being my first post doing so.

MUSIC -- I write album reviews (currently talking about my top 6 Albums of 2023!), music opinions and memoir pieces about my life as a part time groupie! Here’s my most recent post about Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit’s Weathervanes! Thank you Sarah and everyone on this thread for sharing your pieces ❤️🔥
Just a fabulous thread, such wonderful writers here. Thank you all, thank you Sarah. I am curious what each of these possible responses mean....share means share with subscribers to my stack? recommend, the same (goes to subscribers)? Restack means? following means? sharing a note? So many ways to respond. If it's not too difficult, a comparison graphic would be super helpful or a link...
INSPIRATION~ My writing is one a memoir of a Comeback story for myself and Ontario Trumpeter Swans.
For this post I happily used the audio for the first time.
I loved to be able to turn it into a storytelling of a really rough time in my life and with the help of a book, I am doing it again and pass on how it is good as a New Year empowerment message.
My hearts desire came true, while I was in a very unsafe, toxic living space. I found Dr. Joe Dispensa and the book Becoming Supernatural and I give it credit for raising my energy that shifted my life for the better.
I read Coles notes when he describes how to master your mind and health, what really helps is all the scientfic data backing up what happens when we are in survival mode.
I am doing the same thing again to take my energy off the collective, and be in this sweet generous moment to create a beautiful future again.
Are you ready to say enough to the trauma and drama too?
CREATIVITY AND THE INNER CRITIC! I’m just starting but I’m going to share my own creative process and share some of the tools and wisdom I share with clients in my therapy practice. I want to integrate my journey as both a therapist and artist and see what sprouts forth 🌱 grateful to be here! 🙏🏼
I so wanted to participate and support other writers. I was at the airport when I posted then flight cancelled, everyone charging to a ticket counter for rebooking, more crap, getting to LA but luggage lost and now trying to find the bags. This is an example of Behind the Post— life beyond participation. Sigh. PS Alaska Air just grounded their entire fleet.
TRAVEL--I share insights on travel as creative practice, how you can start carving the time out (yes, even in the parenting season), and why it is so damn neccessary.
WINTERS REST... It’s not published until tomorrow (though I’m sharing the secret draft link below for this community) but I’ve spent a long time creating a recording of a meditation for my community this week. What troubled me was mainly hearing the sound of my own voice and a massive fear of judgement of this once it’s out into the world. BUT I do feel it’s so valuable as a practice and pushed myself!!!
I’m a 30-year-old man from Boston, MA. As a teenager, I fell into drug addiction, enduring a relentless cycle of homelessness and rehab for five years.
My struggle was compounded by severe mental illness, which I see as the root cause of most addictions.
Using my own experiences, I fictionally chronicle my brutal story through Joseph Dean, a young addict sifting through the grim vignettes of his existence, with hopes that it will aid others in their path to freedom.
Why is my content interesting? I'm not sure, perhaps it isn't. Perhaps I'm just an ex-junky seeking some sort of purpose through words. After sixteen years of daily writing, this is what I've come up with. An apology? Excuse? Manifesto?
OUR IMMEASURABLE WORTH. I’m an antique dealer specializing in fine jewelry. There’s often special significance behind the jewelry mentioned in the Biblical Text, and I find particular joy in researching their meanings and applying them to the larger message in Scripture. In this post, I take a deep dive (pun intended😉) into the value of pearls and how that knowledge broadens our understanding of at least one parable. Other applications will be explored in future posts.
I'd love some advice re: building a wider audience! I'm a 100% free publication, as I discover if there's interest in what I write. I post every 2 weeks on Saturday mornings and post the link on my FB page on Sunday mornings. Would interested readers struggle to find me? Is there a best time to post? What social media is effective? Any thoughts will be appreciated!
A moment of connection in nature with CHICKADEES ON ICE! I write behind-the-lens stories about nature photography images, and I make images inspired by the wonder and delight and connection I so often find in the natural world. AMERICAN FICTION IN ONE SENTENCE – A one-sentence capture of this recent film’s emotional architecture, a quick lesson we can learn about story design from it, and a prompt.
Thanks, Jenna, I hope you enjoy the post! Planning to do single sentence captures and story design lessons of a different book, short story, film, etc every week as my Substack concept.
I was inspired to write this after recently speaking with three friends and two clients who are struggling to put themselves first so much that they can't yet see that they are what stands between where/who they are and where/who they want to be.
Haven't posted in a while... mea culpa. I'm working on a piece about "Attention Is Your Superpower... Watch Out For The Kryptonite!" genre is self-development. I spent years studying & practicing energy psychologies & integration techniques. This is one important aspect. (Upcoming Post)

AMERICAN FICTION IN ONE SENTENCE – A one-sentence capture of this recent film’s emotional architecture, a quick lesson we can learn about story design from it, and a prompt.
I love the creative concept of your Substack, Preety! I recently watched American Fiction, so I'm excited to read your breakdown here.
Thanks, Jenna, I hope you enjoy the post! Planning to do single sentence captures and story design lessons of a different book, short story, film, etc every week as my Substack concept.
